Bapu, the
Spiritual Artist
The
most celebrated Telugu artist and film maker, Bapu had his first drawing published in 1945
when he was twelve years old. A very modest and soft spoken Bapu with a degree in law,
devoted his life to his passion for creativity expressed through cartoons, portraits,
caricatures, illustrations, calligraphy, graphics, paintings and films.
Bapu has a unique style. His works are marked by an economy of strokes and there is no
background clutter even when the subjects are very complex. They capture with great
felicity the central idea expressed in Ramayana, Mahabharatha, Bhagavatha, Amukta
Maalayada, Annamacharya Keertana, Sri Sri's Mahaprasthanam or Dasarathi's translations of
Ghalib's ghazals.
The deep seated spirituality in Bapu imparts a vivid visual dynamism to the age-old Hindu
epics and scriptures. Steeped in tradition, his work depicts the true Indianness and
Telugu culture at its best, with oriental curves and impressive faces with large
expressive eyes. Bapu's genius can be seen in his exquisite arts where the men show valour
and extreme kindness, while the women are depicted with rich ethnic glamour and dignity.
Impressions, a Vijayawada company, specialising in high quality reproductions, has made it
possible to carry Bapu's Art into hundreds of homes through its high quality printing
